Do you have young kids? Keep them safer with these tips!
CRIB SAFETY
The mattress should be the size the crib is made for, and the sheets should fit tightly. It
is best for the infant to sleep in their crib on their back, furthermore, there should be no
soft bedding in the crib such as pillows, stuffed animals, etc. For metal or wooden cribs,
make sure slats are 2 3/8 inches apart or less. Corner posts should not be over 1/16
inch high. Avoid headboards and footboards with cutouts large enough that a baby's head
can become trapped. (3.5-9 inches) You should move cribs away from strings from your
blinds, and if your blind cords have continuous loops, cut them in two.
PLAY TIME SAFETY
Keep anything that can fit through a toilet paper roll out of childrens reach. Make sure
the "squeaker" in squeaker toys would be very difficult to get out, or take the squaker
out. You should keep balloons away from children, if they burst and your the child
swallows a small peice it could be dangerous. If your child has drawstrings in their
clothes, you should take the drawstrings out. You should also read labels on your
child's toys, and make sure they are the appropriate age for the toy.
HELP PREVENT FALLS
Children under 6 should not climb higher than 4 feet, and children older than 6 should
climb no higher than 6 feet. It is better for your child to play on a playground with pea
gravel, rubber mulch, or hardwood chips, rather than on dirt or grass. To prevent falls out
of windows, install window guards with a quick-realease mechanism in case of fire. If you
have stairs you should use gates at the top and bottom of the stairs that are hard-ware
mounted, and you shouldn't use accordian-style gates, a childs head could get get
trapped.
