Fall is here! This is my favorite kind of weather. Just cool enough to wear a light jacket. With
that said, it is never to early to start preparing for winter. Get rock salt to melt the ice on
walkways, sand to improve traction, and pick up some snow shovels.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Prepare your home~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Prepare for possible isolation in your home by having sufficient fuel; regular fuel sources may be
cut off. For example, if you have a fireplace get wood for it.
*Insulate pipes with insulation or newspapers and plastic, and allow faucets to drip a little during
cold weather to avoid freezing.
*Keep fire extinguishers on hand, make sure everyone knows how to use them.
*Learn how to shut off water valves (in case a pipe bursts.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Prepare your car~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Check the following items on your car:
*Antifreeze Levels - You can buy a gauge at Wal-mart for about $1.
*Battery and Ignition System - Clean battery terminals.
*Brakes - Check to see they still have a good amount of padding, and check the fluid levels.
*Exhaust System - Check for leaks and crimped pipes.
*Fuel and Air Filters - Replace and keep water out of the system by using additives and
maintaining a full tank of gas.
*Heater and Defroster - Ensure these work properly.
*Lights and Flashing Hazards - Check for service ability.
*Oil - Heavier oils congeal more at low temperatures, and do not lubricate as well.
*Thermostat - Ensure it works properly.
