Oklahoma is cracking down on those who don’t have auto insurance! Beginning July 1, 2009, driving without liability insurance will carry a maximum fine of $350 and hundreds more in court costs and fees. You could be jailed for up to 30 days and repeat offenders are subject to a two-year driver license suspension.
To maintain good-standing with the law, you must establish financial responsibility for your vehicle. For most of us, that means purchasing liability insurance. You may choose any limits you wish, but according to the state law, you must have at least 25/50. This is to insure that if you cause an accident and someone gets hurt, their medical bills are paid by your insurance. However, if their bills exceed the limit of liability you have, you are still responsible for paying them. This is something to consider with the rising cost of health care. You might want to choose higher limits such as 50/100 or 100/300. It depends on how much you have to lose!
Of course, there are other ways to establish financial responsibility. You can cover yourself under the Oklahoma Assigned Risk Auto Plan, you can make a cash deposit of $75,000 with the Department of Public Safety or an authorized state financial institution, or you can obtain a bond issued by an authorized surety company. Since most of us don’t have the funds necessary to do these things, liability insurance is the best option.
Before deciding on a carrier, take the time to compare quotes from a variety of insurance companies. This is where an independent agency can be a real asset. They have access to several different companies to run quotes and compare prices. It’s kind of like one-stop-shopping! And all you have to do is make one phone call.
