That nasty storm back on June 14th really left its mark on Norman, OK. It didn't last long, but it was vicious with serious straight-line winds and lots of hail. Since we've been talking with several of our clients and turning in claims, we've discovered a disturbing trend.
Rumor has it there are several "roofing companies" going door to door, offering to look at your roof and see if it is damaged. Do you remember the old adage "If it seems to good to be true, it usually is."? These folks have been making all kinds of offers to homeowners to help "take care" of their issues.
While we're sure that some of these people probably have your best interests in mind, be safe and DON'T FALL FOR IT.
Roofing companies are the ultimate winners when it comes to hail storms and insurance claims, and they know it.
Your best bet is to call a local roofing company, or someone you might know personally. Don't know anyone? Ask your friends, or call us. We keep the names of a couple of reputable companies on hand for occasions like these. Local companies usually do have your best interest at heart as they can't afford a bad reputation in their home town.
We are seeing the trend continue as we get more catastrophic weather events that seem to bring the crooks out of the woodwork. There's another old adage, "there's a fool born every minute and someone there to take him.". Do your homework to protect yourself!
As a side note to those of you having your roofs replaced, be sure you check what kind of work your roofer does, i.e., do they nail shingles by hand or with a pressure hammer? Sometimes those hammers will push a nailhead through the shingle, so instead of holding it in place, it flies off with the next stout south wind. We want to trust that roofers will do a good job, but it doesn't hurt to be proactive and check their work. The ones we know take pride in their work and would be proud to show you how they do it.
Pray for good weather! If the insurance companies catch a break, they'll pass it on to the rest of us!
