Watch out for those kids!

School is back in!

Jet power for when you're really late for class!

As many of us already know, school is back in session. Many of us are wondering, along with our kids, where the heck did summer go?  Regardless of the speed of time, the one thing we all need to be aware of is our speed in school zones.  The Edmond police department alone wrote 55 tickets and 63 warnings on the very first day of school this year.  They say they would have made more stops, but they felt the rainfall would have created hazardous situations in trying to stop drivers.

25 mph is painfully slow, especially when you’re already late for work.  But there’s a good reason for that speed limit.   If a child runs out into the street, you are going slow enough to stop or manuever your car to avoid hitting that child.  Now, if everyone would just put down the cell phone, our kids would be that much safer.  Remember the texting article and all the commercials against “intexticated driving”?   Your response time is severely inhibited when you’re busy looking at your phone, and those two-legged boogers can jump out in front of you in a fraction of that time!

Hmmm....which way?

If you have several school zones between you and the office, try to figure out a different route, or simply get up a little earlier.  After a week, you’ll never notice the difference.  It is one thing for your boss to chew you out because you were late, but it would be another thing if you had to spend your bonus on a hefty speeding ticket.  One of the cars stopped in Edmond was clocked at 20mph over the limit.  That might cost him up to $549.  Ouch!    Though it would be quite another thing if you accidentally hit a child with your car and had that on your conscience for the rest of your life.

Parents can also remind their kids to be very careful when crossing the streets, and we can remind ourselves to be very careful around school zones.  Let’s look out for each other, and be careful out there!
