Why loss of use should be part of your policy.

A Single Horsepower Car

People often say that the car has replaced the horse in modern society.  This is really an understatement.  The car is so much more important than the horse ever was.  When was the last time you went without driving your car?  How long do you think you could go without having to use it?  Unless you live in the heart of the city, the answer is not very long!

When buying car insurance, many people assume that they’re getting certain coverages.  They expect to be covered in case they cause an accident with another car.  They also expect the car insurance will pay for the repair or replacement of their own car if it is damaged.  One of the things they may not anticipate is that they will be given a replacement car while theirs is being replaced or repaired.  Many policies don’t provide this coverage automatically.  If you are at all dependent on your car, it is vital that you make sure that this type of coverage is included.  Rental cars are not cheap!

Not a cheap rental!

The best way to see if you have this type of coverage is to read your insurance policy.  You are looking for something that says “loss of use”.   Loss of use coverage refers to the expenses for transportation while your car is being repaired or replaced.  In more practical terms, it simply means that you have coverage for a rental car.  Most policies that offer this coverage giveyou a limit per day, not to exceed a certain amount.  For instance, your policy might allow for up to $50 per day for a maximum amount of $900 total.  Every company differs in what they offer.

The idea of buying more insurance probably is one of the least favorite things for most people.  That being said, going for days without your car could be far worse.  Most of us have to drive for work and all the other basics of life.  It’s so much easier to get a rental car rather than try to make arrangements to travel with someone else.  Your friends and family will certainly appreciate it too!
