There are only about 38 days until spring, and 130 days until summer, so hang in there!
Why do we leave our faucets running when it will be extremely cold?
Water expands when it turns to ice, so when we leave our faucets running, it
gives the water room to do so. Contrary to popular belief, it is not to keep pipes
from freezing, but it is to help prevent the pipes from bursting. Insulating your pipes
well is a way you can prevent your water from freezing.
Hydration is very important, especially in the winter months because the air is drier, the
heat is forced in homes, and we wear thick winter clothes which cause dry skin.
Ways to stay properly hydrated: Start with what you put in your body. Eat well
balanced meals, drink plenty of water, and avoid caffeinated beverages. Then, focus
on moisturizing your skin. It is best to do so once you get out of the shower or bath,
pat dry, then immediately apply moisturizer. And to further protect your skin, wear
sunscreen, there are still harmful UV rays in the winter. You should also avoid long
hot showers, and it is best to take them at night so you dont go from warm to cold
all of a sudden when you leave in the morning. If you do not have a humidifier to
keep air in your home moist, then you can also put pots of water by heating vents.
Keep warm by wearing multiple thin layers of clothing, and drinking sweet, warm,
uncaffeinated drinks, like hot chocolate! (Hmm.. hot chocolate sounds good, I might
have to make some when I get home now.)
Be safe while working outside by working slower than normal to prevent extra strain
on your heart. Also, keep from sweating. The moisture makes your body cooler.
